You’re calmly scrolling through Facebook or Instagram and suddenly an image of Jesus Christ made of shrimp appears. Or a video of Will Smith eating spaghetti in a disturbingly unreal way.

You stop for a second, raise an eyebrow and think: “But why was there any need to publish this?” Congratulations, you just came face to face with the Slop, or as they call it in the rest of the world: the AI Slop.

Today at ComunicaGenia we are going to explain this phenomenon that is transforming our digital ecosystem into a kind of dumping ground for pixels and algorithms.

What exactly is this “Dirt”?

The term “AI Slop” (or simply slop) has become the buzzword to describe content generated by artificial intelligence that lacks quality, intent or a minimum of human effort**.

If we translated it literally from English, slop refers to the soft mud or food scraps given to pigs. A quite graphic metaphor for what we consume today on networks.

This is mass-produced digital garbage (images, texts, audios or videos) whose sole objective is to attract clicks, generate empty interactions and feed the machinery of the attention economy.

It is the digital equivalent of “junk food”: it is produced quickly, it is cheap to generate and, although it fills the feed, it provides absolutely no intellectual nutrition.

A little recent history

Although it seems like we’ve been like this all our lives, the concept began to take shape around 2022 with the arrival of tools like DALL-E or Midjourney. What started as a game by users on forums like 4chan or Hacker News to criticize “AI pollution” ended up exploding in 2024 with absurd viral images.

Its impact was such that the prestigious Merriam-Webster chose “slop” as one of the words of the year in 2025.

The Flood Figures: A Sea of Synthetic Content

If you think these are isolated cases, the data says otherwise. We are facing a real explosion of synthetic content. To give you an idea of the magnitude:

Daily production: Through AI alone, about 34 million images are generated every day. Since 2022, more than 15 billion have already been created.

Business adoption: 51% of companies already use generative AI to create content and automate processes.

Future predictions: It is estimated that by 2030, 90% of online content could be synthetic.

Global Market: Projected at USD 53,788 million by 2033.

Social Concern: 58.8% of the population fears not distinguishing what is real from what is false.

This means that, if we don’t remedy it, finding content genuinely created by a human being will be like searching for a needle in a haystack of algorithms.

Why are our networks full of this?

The short answer is: for money. Social media platforms work through recommendation algorithms that reward engagement and retention. AI facilitates personalization and the massive generation of posts that, even if they are absurd, make people stop to look or comment.

The “Dead Internet” effect

Some experts are already talking about the “dead internet theory”, a scenario where the majority of interactions on the network are not between humans, but between bots and AI systems.

On networks like Facebook, feeds have been detected where up to 95% of the initial content is generated by AI.

This includes everything from the aforementioned “Shrimp Jesus” to advertisements for games that don’t even exist or fake events, like that Halloween parade in Dublin that went viral but only existed in the circuits of an AI.

The impact on communication and marketing

For those of us dedicated to marketing and communication, AI Slop is not just an aesthetic nuisance; It is a serious strategic problem. The proliferation of this digital “dirt” generates several negative side effects:

Erosion of trust: When the user feels deceived by a fake video or an unattainable hyperrealistic image, they begin to doubt all the content, even the legitimate one.

Filter bubbles and biases: AI algorithms tend to amplify prejudices and lock us in echo chambers, limiting our view of the world.

Disinformation and deepfake parades: Slop is not only boring, it can be dangerous. It is used to generate state propaganda or false political advertisements that 74% of the population fears finding on their screens.

Model collapse: If future AIs are trained using the mediocre data generated by current AIs, we will enter a spiral of quality degradation known as «model collapse«.

Is this the end of human creativity?

Not at all! In fact, at ComunicaGenia we are optimistic. Although the landscape may seem like an “antisocial wasteland” full of empty content, this opens up a golden opportunity for authenticity.

In a world saturated with Garbage, the value of humanity will be premium. The ability to tell a story with soul, to provide unique reasoning and to show a genuine perspective will become the greatest asset of any brand or creator.

Keep your eyes open

AI Slop is here to stay, at least for a while. It is the result of incredibly powerful technology in the hands of misaligned economic incentives.

Our first defense is media literacy: learning to detect those visual glitches, those hands with six fingers or those texts that say a lot but mean nothing.

We will continue with this topic soon, but with a much more practical approach. We will analyze specific strategies so that you, as a user and as a professional, can clean your PorquerÍA feed and recover the social essence of the internet.

Has it ever happened to you that you believed a post and then realized that it was pure “slop”?
