If you’re into the world of digital marketing, content creation or SEO, you’ve probably spent a lot of hours “training” your favorite AI assistant**. You’ve taught him the tone of your brand, your preferences, how you like to structure articles, and even what kinds of jokes to make.

But what happens when a new model comes out and you want to try it? Until recently, changing from ChatGPT to another alternative was incredibly lazy because it meant starting from scratch.

Well, I bring you good news. The landscape has changed radically and data portability in AI chatbots opens up a very interesting debate and possibilities.

Discover how to migrate all your history and context between the main chatbots on the market.

The new era of portability: Why is it important?

Making life easier for the user when migrating is becoming a key differentiator. Retaining users by forcing them to stay because of the effort involved in the change no longer works.

Google took an important step on March 26, 2026 by launching features called “switching tools” in Gemini. These tools allow you to directly transfer your personal information, context (what they call memories) and complete histories from other platforms such as ChatGPT and Claude.

This greatly reduces the effort of “retraining” your new assistant. If you manage more than 1,000 prompts or have dozens of active projects, this will save you hours of work. Let’s see how to do this transfer step by step.

Step 1: How to export your data from your current AI

Before we move, we have to pack our bags. This is how you can get your information off platforms that are currently a little more restrictive when it comes to importing.

Export from ChatGPT (OpenAI)

Although ChatGPT is a leading tool, it is currently a step behind in terms of input portability, as it does not have a native import from other providers. However, exporting your data is pretty straightforward:

  • Enter ChatGPT and click on your profile photo, located at the bottom left.
  • Go to Settings > Data Controls > Export Data and tap Export. Then confirm the export.
  • You will receive an email with a link to a ZIP file. Please note that this email may take up to 7 days to arrive, and the download link will only be valid for 24 hours.
  • Inside that ZIP you will find a key file called conversations.json, which includes the entire history of your chats, as well as other data from your account.

Export from Grok (xAI)

Like the OpenAI platform, Grok does not have a native import tool. To take your conversations with you, the export process is done through its portal:

  • Go to accounts.x.ai/data (or from the app in Settings > Data Controls).
  • Click on the Download your account data option. They will send you an email with the file containing your complete conversation history.

Step 2: Import to the most open platforms (Gemini and Claude)

This is where the real portability magic happens. Both Google and Anthropic are leading this movement to receive your data easily.

Import to Gemini (Google)

The functionality launched by Google in March 2026 allows you to import two fundamental things. On the one hand, your memories, which include preferences, relationships and key facts.

On the other hand, your complete chat stories in ZIP format, so you can continue old conversations and search them. Google describes it as the ability to “pick up exactly where you left off” and it is an option that is now available immediately.

To do so, follow these steps:

  • To transfer your memories: Gemini generates a specific prompt. You copy that text and paste it into your current chatbot (for example, ChatGPT or Claude). Your old bot will generate a structured summary about you, which you then simply copy and paste back into Gemini.
  • For your complete history: You take the ZIP file that you previously exported from ChatGPT and upload it directly to Gemini. Also supports Claude files.

Import to Claude (Anthropic)

Claude was the pioneer in enabling memory import in March 2026, making the process very simple. You can bring your memory from almost any platform, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok or Copilot.

Additionally, this feature is available for the free, Pro and Max plans, both in web and desktop versions. The process is as follows:

  • Go to Settings > Capabilities > Memory and click on Start import (sometimes this option also appears from the home screen).
  • Copy the prompt that Claude gives you.
  • Paste it into your current chatbot. This step will generate a block of text containing everything the AI knows about you: instructions, preferences, projects, personal details, etc.
  • Copy that resulting block and paste it into Claude, selecting Add to memory. Claude will process all this information in less than 24 hours.

As a note: if you need to export from Claude, you can literally ask him: “Write out your memories of me verbatim” to copy them, or download a ZIP with the complete history from Settings > Privacy > Export data)

Third-party tools and limitations to keep in mind

If you handle thousands of chats at work, doing it manually may be unfeasible. Luckily, there are very useful third-party tools for mass migrations. One of the most notable is ChatMover (aichatmover.com), which exports, converts and migrates conversations between ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini in minutes.

You also have browser extensions like Memory Forge or Memo to extract memories, and options like AI Chat Exporter or Grok to PDF to extract individual chats in PDF or Markdown format.

Even so, before hitting the migrate button, keep in mind these limitations and important considerations:

  • What DOES NOT travel with you: Uploaded files, Custom GPTs or Gems, platform-specific settings, or excessively long conversations are not transferred automatically and may require you to process them manually.
  • Privacy first: Imported memories are used to improve the model, based on each company’s policies. Always review content carefully and remove sensitive client or project information before copying and pasting.
  • Files and times: The JSON and ZIP formats are the ones that will give you the least compatibility problems. Remember that while memory exports are almost instantaneous, requesting the full history can take days to generate.

Is it worth moving now?

Absolutely yes. Switching AI chatbots no longer means losing years of valuable context thanks to new tools from Gemini and Claude. If you were considering trying Gemini or another option, you will see that the process is surprisingly simple.

The trend for all of 2026 is that tough competition is pushing providers to improve the right to data portability. This technology is just getting started and is going to completely change how we use and integrate these assistants into our routines.
