Known worldwide as the “godmother of AI,” Fei-Fei Li has transformed the way we understand computer vision. And it has more than earned a place among the protagonists of modern AI.

His story is a story of improvement: he emigrated from China to the United States at the age of 16 and, while studying Physics at Princeton, he helped in the family laundry to get ahead. That tenacity led her to earn a doctorate at Caltech and become one of the brightest minds at Stanford University.

ImageNet: The spark that ignited Deep Learning

In the mid-2000s, while other researchers were focusing on complex algorithms, Li had a radical idea: the problem was not the models, but the lack of data.

In 2007 it launched ImageNet, a colossal database with more than 14 million labeled images. This project was the necessary fuel for deep neural networks (Deep Learning) to demonstrate their superiority in 2012, unleashing the current revolution that allows computers to “see” and recognize objects with almost human precision.

A future of ethical AI and spatial intelligence

Beyond pixels, Li is the leading advocate of human-centered AI. As co-founder of the Stanford HAI Institute and the AI4ALL initiative, she fights to make technology ethical, diverse and inclusive, preventing algorithmic biases from harming minorities.

After a successful time at Google Cloud, where he promoted the democratization of AI for companies, Li has taken a new leap towards the technological frontier.

In 2024 he founded World Labs, a startup that in 2026 already leads the field of “spatial intelligence”. Its goal is to create models that not only understand flat images, but understand and generate 3D worlds, allowing machines to interact with the physical environment intelligently.
