Yann LeCun is not just a scientist; is one of the influential leaders in the development of AI and the man who survived the “AI winter” thanks to an unwavering faith in neural networks.

Born in 1960 in Soisy-sous-Montmorency, near Paris, his destiny seemed sealed since, as a teenager, he filled his room with cables to build synthesizers and electronic devices.

That curiosity for complex systems led him to obtain a doctorate at the Pierre and Marie Curie University, where he began to forge what we know today as deep learning.

His most revolutionary contribution, and the one that changed technology forever, are Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN).

In the late 1980s, while working at Bell Labs in the US, LeCun was inspired by the biology of the human visual cortex to design a system capable of efficiently processing images.

The result was LeNet-5, an architecture that allowed computers to recognize handwritten numbers with astonishing accuracy. It was not just a theoretical experiment: their system processed 20% of all bank checks in the United States during the 90s.

Perseverance in the “winter” and recognition

Despite this success, the scientific community turned its back on neural networks for years. LeCun, however, never gave up.

He co-developed tools like the image compression format DjVu and the programming language Lush, keeping the flame of research alive until, in 2012, the world realized he was right.

In 2013, he was recruited by Mark Zuckerberg to found FAIR (Facebook AI Research), where he has led the development of object recognition** and translation technologies that we use daily on social networks.

In 2018 he received the Turing Award, the highest award in computing, and in 2023 he was awarded the Legion of Honor in France.

The vision of the future: open and meaningful AI

Today, LeCun is an ardent advocate of open source and is focused on creating “goal-driven AI” that can learn models of the world, similar to how humans or animals do, avoiding the logical errors of current models.

He is a tireless optimist who believes that AI will free us from monotonous tasks to allow us to be more creative.
