As we explain in our Definitive Guide to Local SEO in Malaga, your Google Business Profile is the first contact between your brand and whoever searches for you on Maps or in the “local pack”.

If your profile is incomplete, generic or outdated, you don’t just lose clicks: you give away customers to your competition. In this article I tell you the 5 most frequent mistakes that we see in businesses in Malaga and how to solve them with clear and quick steps.

Why optimizing your Google Company Profile matters (a lot) in Malaga

When someone writes “barber shop near me” or “shoe store downtown,” they’re not browsing: they’re ready to buy or visit. In that moment of high intent, Google shows few options.

But if you don’t appear or don’t stand out, you lose the opportunity. Optimizing your profile is not a “marketing task”: it is capturing existing demand, today. Your profile is a central asset, which integrates with the rest of your local strategy.

Error 1: Not claiming or verifying your profile

It’s like having a store on Calle Larios… but without a sign. Google can create listings automatically, but until you claim and verify you don’t control anything: no photos, no schedules, no reviews, no updates. And if you don’t do it, others (or the community itself) may suggest changes that don’t suit you.

Practical solution

  • Search for your business on Google/Maps and click “Claim this business”.
  • Complete verification (by video, phone, mail or postal, as applicable).
  • Activate account protection (users, recovery, alerts).
  • Check that name, address and telephone number (NAP) are correct.

Mini-check: Does your listing show the “Not verified” warning? If so, the absolute priority is to do it as soon as possible.

Mistake 2: Choosing the wrong or too generic category

This failure is subtle… and lethal. A beach bar labeled “Restaurant” competes with categories that do not represent it and does not appear in searches for “beach bar in Malaga”. An “emergency plumber” marked as “Repair Service” loses visibility in critical searches.

Practical solution

  • Define a specific main category, the one that brings you the most income.
  • Add secondary ones when they make sense (e.g.: “Seafood restaurant”, “Chiringuito”).
  • Look at the Top 3 Maps for your term and see what categories they use.
  • Do not “invent” categories or do keyword stuffing in the name of the business (infringes policies).

Example in Málaga: If you are “Immigration Lawyer in Málaga”, avoid “Law Firm” as the only category. Use “Immigration Attorney” as primary and “Lawyer” as secondary.

Error 3: Description without local intention (or filled with topics)

The description is not a procedure; It is your pitch (a brief and clear presentation). If you write generic text, Google and the user do not understand what you do, for whom and where. You miss valuable searches by neighborhoods and areas.

Practical solution

  • Write your value proposition and neighborhoods/areas you serve in 600 – 750 characters (Teatinos, El Limonar, Huelin, Centro, Rincón de la Victoria if applicable).
  • Includes key services (“same day diagnosis”, “walk-in”, “at home”).
  • Close with social proof (“+500 reviews”), and an invitation (“Book by WhatsApp”).

Before (generic): “Plumbing services for homes and businesses.”

After (local and useful): “Emergency plumber 24/7 in Malaga. Quick repairs for leaks and unclogging in Teatinos, El Limonar and Huelin. We arrive in less than 45 minutes and we offer a guarantee on each service. Request a quote by WhatsApp or call us: attention without fine print.”

Mini-check: Do you name Malaga and the key neighborhoods near your business, or those you serve? Is it clear THAT what makes you different? Solve it as soon as possible.

Error 4: Ignore photos and posts (Google Posts)

A profile without photos is a profile without life. People want to see the actual terrace, the interior and the equipment. In addition, many businesses are unaware of Posts (offers, news, events), which allow you to communicate as in a social network within Google.

Practical solution

  • Essential photos: facade (day and night), interior, equipment, star product, letter/menu, access (parking, ramps), atmosphere during rush hours.
  • Cadence: upload 3–5 new photos every month; renews seasonal images (Malaga Fair, Christmas, Easter).
  • Posts: publish 2–4 per month. Types: Offer (summer discount), Novelty (new menu), Event (tasting, live show), Update (schedule changes).
  • Good practices: use real photos, well lit and focused on the experience. Avoid impersonal image banks.

Mini-check: Does the main photo convey the best of your business today? If not, change it. Do you work at night? Post photos at night.

Mistake 5: Letting reviews go by without responding

A review without a response is a missed opportunity. Responding (also to positive ones) shows closeness and improves your conversion rate.

With negative ones, the key is empathy + solution (and move the detail to private). We have dedicated a complete guide to responding to criticism, with examples from Malaga.

Practical solution (template):

“Hello, [Name], thank you for reporting this and we are sorry that [incident] was not up to par. We have taken [brief corrective action] to prevent it from happening again. Can you contact us at [email] or [phone] to help you personally? —[Name and title]”

Mini-check: Do you respond to all reviews in less than a week? Set that standard for yourself.

NAP, schedules and attributes: the basics that matter the most

There are chips that fall due to details: an old telephone, poorly defined schedules, a website that does not load on a mobile phone. All of this reduces trust and clicks.

Consistent NAP

  • Make sure that Name, Address and Telephone match on your website, networks and directories.
  • Avoid variations of the name (“Zapatería El Centro” vs “Calzados El Centro”).

Live schedules

  • Defines regular and special hours (holidays, summer, Fair).
  • If you change due to an event, update and take advantage of a Post to tell about it.

Attributes and services

  • Check relevant attributes: terrace, wheelchair access, card payment, delivery, takeaway, unisex bathroom, pets allowed (depending on the business).
  • Activate useful functions: Book, Messages, Orders (in hospitality) and Products/Services with indicative prices.

The visibility of your business is in your hands

Correcting these 5 errors does not require months of work: it is a tune-up that many overlook. In Malaga, there is still a huge opportunity: a large part of businesses have not even claimed their profile.

That means you can stand out with basic and consistent actions. Start today: claim, specialize, explain, show and respond. And when you have the essentials, go deeper with the Local SEO Guide in Malaga to integrate your profile with your website, content and review strategy.
