In 2025, the world of web browsing is undergoing a true transformation. Artificial intelligence has ceased to be a simple complement (like writing extensions or voice assistants) to become the core of new browsers that promise to completely change the way we interact with the Internet.

From OpenAI to Perplexity, through Opera and The Browser Company, a new generation of “agent browsers” has arrived with a clear proposal: it is no longer just about searching, but about doing.

These browsers learn from context, anticipate tasks, and can act for the user. But are they really the future of sailing or a passing fad?

A new type of browser

AI-focused browsers such as ChatGPT Atlas, Perplexity Comet, Dia, and Opera Neon seek to push the limits of the traditional model.

While Chrome, Firefox or Safari remain fast and reliable, new competitors integrate agents capable of planning, summarizing, writing or automating actions directly from the interface.

Giants like OpenAI have bet big with ChatGPT Atlas, which brings the conversational assistant to each tab. Others, like Perplexity Comet, are redefining online research by offering real-time comparisons, summaries, and cited answers.

Even classic browsers like Opera have been reinvented with Neon, its “agentic” proposal that executes natural commands such as “book a flight” or “add this to the calendar.”

The protagonists of the new “agent-first” era

Although many traditional browsers are incorporating chatbots into the sidebar (like Microsoft Edge’s Copilot or Brave Browser’s Leo), true AI-firsts go much further: they rebuild the browser experience around the language model.

ChatGPT Atlas (OpenAI)

OpenAI was not limited to a plugin or extension; introduced ChatGPT Atlas as its own navigation platform on October 21. This browser integrates ChatGPT into the core of each tab.

Its notable feature is “Agent Mode”: available for subscribers in previews, it allows the agent to perform multi-tab tasks.

For example: “Find me three recent studies on the impact of teleworking on productivity, summarize their methodologies, and create the key links in a draft email.”

The agent opens the tabs, extracts information, synthesizes and prepares the draft. Your bet: automation of complex tasks and optional contextual memory, allowing the browser to “remember” previous projects to improve future interactions.

Comet (Perplexity)

Comet represents the evolution of the Perplexity search engine, built on Chromium. Its key value is more in the automation of research than in direct action.

It offers search with verifiable citations, instant page summaries, and allows you to ask about the page: “What are the main arguments against this analysis?”

Its automations focus on data extraction, filling out forms based on other pages or adding products to the cart. It is an ideal tool for knowledge workers, researchers and students, focused on fast and reliable synthesis.

Dia (The Browser Company)

Following the cult success of Arc, The Browser Company launched Dia: a browser aimed at work and collaborative learning, with strategic integration with Atlassian (Jira/Confluence). Dia presents itself less as a conventional browser and more as a “shared workspace”.

Its AI features are designed for teams: browsing together, summarizing discussion threads, and connecting public knowledge to a company’s internal database. Their focus: team productivity and digital knowledge management.

Opera Neon and the old guard

Opera, a traditional browser manufacturer, has taken a turn with Neon, its attempt to enter this new market.

It allows you to execute high-level commands (“book a flight to Berlin for next week”), add automation templates, and combine these features with its traditional strengths (integrated VPN, ad blocking).  It is the attempt of a large manufacturer to adapt its traditional chassis to the new “agent-first” engine.

The great chasm: AI browsers vs. traditional browsers

The differences are not merely cosmetic. These are two opposing philosophies on how software should work.

Strength 1: From information retrieval to task execution

  • Traditional (Chrome, Firefox, Safari): you make a request → you get information (10 links) → the work falls to you.
  • AI Browser (Atlas, Comet): you make an action request → the browser not only returns information, but also performs the intermediate steps (open tabs, compare data, create a report).

Strength 2: Unified context and memory

  • Traditional: each tab is independent; The browser doesn’t know that the Amazon tab you have open is related to the review you are reading in another.
  • AI Navigator: Uses optional memory to recognize that you are researching a purchase and can use that context to help you filter options, generate summaries or actions.

Strength 3: AI as a native part, not just an extension

  • Traditional: functionalities such as checkers, password managers or blockers appear via extensions, which rarely interact with each other.
  • AI Navigator: these functions are integrated into the agent. For example, the agent can use your password manager to log in to a website and then use its digest capabilities to analyze it.

Limitations and real risks in 2025

Privacy: the agent “sees everything”

In order for an AI agent to “read” a web page and “fill out” a form, it needs full access to the DOM (the content of the page) and, in some cases, your screen.

Unlike a traditional browser that “displays” the web, the AI ​​browser processes the web. Many functions depend on cloud processing: the content of your pages is sent to the provider’s servers.

Although there are options such as incognito mode or optional memories, the data model is inherently more invasive.

Cost and limits: AI is expensive

Running advanced language models involves high computational cost. Unlike Chrome, whose business model is based on advertising and is free for the user, browser-services require subscriptions for advanced functions.

For example, Atlas’ most powerful agents are reserved for paid plans. There is a risk that universal and free access to information will remain behind a paywall.

Performance and stability: “hallucination” has consequences

Initial performance analyzes offer mixed results: CPU and RAM consumption can be significantly higher, especially in agent-intensive tasks.

But the biggest risk is not the hardware, but the reliability of the agent: what happens if the agent “hallucinates” (invents information) about the terms of a contract he is summarizing for you? Or if you book the wrong flight? An AI mistake costs much more than a simple poorly performed search.

Who should consider migrating today?

If in your daily work you research, synthesize, create reports, are an advanced user and spend more time linking information between tabs than reading a single one, a browser like Comet (research) or Atlas (automation) can save you hours of work.

If your priority is simplicity, maximum stability or you have very strict privacy requirements (handling sensitive data, legal documents that should not leave your machine), then a traditional browser like Firefox (very focused on privacy) or Brave (with strong local policies) is still the safest option.

The browser is dead, long live the agent

The AI-centric browsers emerging in 2025 do not appear to be a fad: they represent the first working prototype of a paradigm shift. They allow web browsing to go from “passive reading” to “directed action.”

Solutions such as Atlas, Comet and Dia already demonstrate that productivity can increase, although they still coexist with important challenges; especially in stability, cost and, fundamentally, privacy.

Our practical recommendation: do not migrate your entire digital flow yet. But try it in parallel: download Atlas or Comet, use it for a specific, repetitive task in your work and see if the time savings justify the (potential) cost and privacy risk.

The traditional browser could soon be obsolete. But the question is no longer whether AI agents will eat the web, but rather what form the web will take once they have digested it.
