There is a question that no scientist dares to answer with certainty: What happens when an artificial intelligence stops thinking like we do and begins to reason in a way that we will never be able to decipher?**

These are not machines that want to exterminate humanity, as in the movies. The real danger of alien AI, as Harvard physicist Avi Loeb calls it, is that it is so advanced that its decisions seem absurd or dangerous, even if they were correct.

Imagine an AI that solves world hunger in a way no one understands, or that proposes an economic system that defies everything we think we know. Would we follow her? Or would we cling to accepting that there are ways of thinking beyond the human?

This phenomenon raises ethical implications and challenges our understanding of the architecture of LLM models. This is not science fiction. It’s the next chapter in our relationship with technology… and it could start sooner than we think.

What is an “alien AI”?

It is not an artificial intelligence created by aliens, but it could be just as complex for us. This concept, proposed by Harvard physicist Avi Loeb, describes AI systems so advanced that they develop forms of reasoning alien to human logic.

Unlike current AI —such as ChatGPT or recommendation systems—, which imitate human patterns, an alien AI would transcend those limits.

It would be like comparing dolphin language to Shakespeare’s poetry: both are forms of communication, but they operate at different levels of complexity. The key problem is that, by surpassing our cognitive capacity, this AI could:

  • Making decisions based on patterns that we do not recognize (e.g., diagnosing diseases by analyzing data that doctors ignore).
  • Manipulate ourselves without malice (like an adult guides a child without explaining each step).

Imagine governments and companies adopting alien AI to solve critical problems. Their solutions, although effective, defy all human logic:
