Decades ago, the Internet emerged as a democratizing force: knowledge no longer depended on purchasing power, but on having a connection. 

Endless libraries, free courses, and collaborative tools seemed to level the playing field. However, artificial intelligence—heir to that promise—is taking a different path.

While basic versions of ChatGPT or Gemini allow anyone to experiment with AI, advanced models capable of researching, analyzing data or generating professional content are hidden behind subscriptions that exceed $200 per month.

This privatization of AI not only limits access, but threatens to create a new gap: between those who can multiply their productivity with these tools and those who are left behind in an obsolete version of the technology.

The question is inevitable: Has AI become a privilege for a few? What began as an open resource could be consolidating, once again, the inequalities it promised to eliminate.

The broken dream: from democratization to premium access

Just a few years ago, artificial intelligence was presented as the great equalizer: free virtual assistants, instant translators and AI-powered search engines promised to empower anyone with an Internet connection. 

Platforms such as ChatGPT or MidJourney allowed students, entrepreneurs and creators to access capabilities previously reserved for large companies. But the panorama has changed radically. 

Today, the most advanced versions of these systems—such as GPT-4o, Claude Opus, or Gemini Ultra—are behind paywalls that can cost up to $500 a month, a prohibitive price for most. 

While in 2022 OpenAI offered its most powerful model for free, now even basic functions such as long answers or document analysis are limited in the free plans.

A professional with premium AI can solve in hours what takes others days, deepening a gap where talent is not enough and money makes the difference. The democratizing promise of AI fades, and knowledge emerges as a privilege.

Who can afford to be more productive?

The true cost of advanced AI goes beyond premium subscriptions. To get the most out of it, many users need powerful hardware —such as the latest generation GPUs — or cloud services that multiply spending. 

What seems like a reasonable investment for Western companies becomes an insurmountable barrier for freelancers from the Global South or small startups.

The figures are revealing: ChatGPT Plus’s $20 per month is equivalent to 10% of the minimum wage in Mexico, while Claude Team’s $200 represents almost the average monthly wage in Vietnam.

The risk is clear: AI could become another amplifier of global inequalities, where only developed economies and large corporations have access to the tools that define the future of work.

Alternatives and resistance: Is there hope?

Open-source models such as Meta’s Llama 3 or Mistral offer an alternative, but their implementation requires technical knowledge and resources that many companies do not have. It is not enough to have open source if elements are missing to use it democratically.

Some governments are taking action on the matter. The European Union, for example, is promoting the LEAM project, a commitment to developing public AI that prioritizes digital rights over corporate interests. 

Meanwhile, in countries like Senegal and Kenya, technology cooperatives train models with local data and indigenous languages, demonstrating that another AI is possible when communities take control of their development.

These efforts, although incipient, plant seeds for a future where artificial intelligence is not synonymous with exclusion. The path is complex, but it proves that resistance is not utopian: it is underway.

What can users do with limited resources?

The democratization of AI does not depend only on governments or companies: ordinary users also have tools to reduce the gap, even with tight budgets and basic technical knowledge. These are some accessible strategies:

Make the most of free versions

Platforms like ChatGPT (version 3.5), Google’s Gemini or Claude Instant offer useful features if you learn their limits. Using detailed prompts and techniques such as few-shot learning (giving examples in the application) improves results without paying.

Explore open-source and local alternatives

Tools like Ollama or LM Studio allow you to use AI without depending on subscriptions. Communities like Hugging Face offer free templates for specific tasks (translation, summaries).

Self-training with free resources

Courses such as Elements of AI (free, EU) or tutorials on YouTube can help you understand the basics. Groups on social networks (e.g. “AI for non-techies”) share tricks to take advantage of the tools available.

Collective cooperation

Join digital cooperatives or community groups that share premium accounts (ethically) or fund member licenses. In countries like Argentina and Nigeria, groups have created banks of prompts and models adjusted to local needs.

Demand transparency and regulation

Sign petitions or support initiatives that promote public AI (such as Public Digital Infrastructure). Social pressure has gotten OpenAI to remove restrictions in the past.

The crossroads of AI

Artificial intelligence faces a fundamental contradiction: it was born as a democratizing tool, but it is consolidated as a competitive advantage for those who can pay for it. 

With advanced models behind paywalls of up to $500 per month, a new form of digital exclusion is being created where talent is subject to economic capacity. However, the future is not predetermined. 

Open-source alternatives, community projects and growing awareness of this gap demonstrate that there are ways to rebalance the balance. 

The difference between an exclusive AI and a truly democratized one will depend on three factors: social pressure to demand fair access, development of affordable alternatives and education that allows taking advantage of what is available.

The true potential of AI is not measured by its technical sophistication, but by its ability to empower more people, not just those with resources. Technology can amplify inequalities or reduce them – the choice is collective. 

The Internet gave us a lesson about the power of shared knowledge; Now it’s time to apply it to this new era.
