The birth of a term and a discipline
The official history of AI began in the summer of 1956. McCarthy, then a young mathematics professor at Dartmouth College, organized the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence.
It was in the proposal for this event where he first used the term «Artificial Intelligence».
Their goal was ambitious: to bring together brilliant minds to explore the hypothesis that every aspect of learning or any other characteristic of intelligence can be described so precisely that a machine can be programmed to simulate it.

He pioneered the concept of time-sharing, which allowed multiple users to access a single mainframe computer simultaneously.
In 1961, during MIT’s centennial, he prophetically suggested that computing power would eventually be sold as a public utility, similar to water or electricity.
This vision is, in essence, the direct ancestor of cloud computing that underpins our current digital economy.
