Max Tegmark is not a conventional technology researcher. Known in the academic field as “Mad Max” for his intellectual audacity, this MIT professor has managed to connect the immensity of cosmology with the microscopic challenges of algorithms.

His transition from studying the origin of the universe to leading the debate on superintelligence has established him as one of the great architects of the future of AI, reminding us that the fate of our species depends on how we program machine consciousness.

From atoms to algorithms

Born in Sweden, Tegmark founded his career in physics and cosmology, areas where he learned that reality can be described by pure mathematics.

However, his curiosity led him to propose that if the human brain is simply a set of particles that process information, there is no physical barrier that prevents machines from reaching, and eventually surpassing, our cognitive capacity. 

For Tegmark, intelligence does not have to do with biology, but with the organization of matter.

«Life 3.0» and the ethical compass

Tegmark’s most profound impact on tech culture came with his international bestseller, Life 3.0. 

In this work, he defines “Life 3.0” as the phase of evolution where beings not only redesign their software (learning), but also their hardware (physical body). This led him to found the Future of Life Institute, an organization dedicated to mitigating existential risks.

His focus is not fear, but preparation: he advocates for an AI that is not only powerful, but intrinsically aligned with the values and goals of humanity.

A legacy of scientific activism

Beyond classrooms and books, Tegmark is a technology security activist. 

He was one of the main drivers of the famous open letter calling for a pause in training giant AI models, seeking time to establish robust security frameworks.

Their work is a constant reminder that the race for artificial intelligence is not just a technical competence, but a global ethical responsibility. 

Thanks to his vision, the conversation about AI has gone from a science fiction script to an international policy priority.
