Within the OpenAI family of reasoning models, the model o3 It already represented a great step forward by offering greater reliability in solving complex problems. 

However, in June 2025 the company introduced o3-pro, a version designed to take those capabilities to the next level and fill a specific niche: tasks where absolute precision matters more than speed.

The main difference between both models is in the reasoning process. While o3 focuses on delivering robust and efficient responses, o3-pro introduces a heavy-duty mode based on chain-of-thought. 

This means that the model thinks step by step: it formulates hypotheses, tests them, corrects possible errors and only then delivers a final answer. Thanks to this approach, you achieve a higher degree of accuracy in technical or multi-stage problems.

Extra power isn’t always worth it

This mode of operation has a cost: o3-pro is slower and requires greater investment of resources. However, its advantage is in the quality of the result. 

In fields such as science, advanced mathematics or complex programming, this difference is decisive. Where o3 can give a good solution, o3-pro tends to give the most accurate one.

In addition, the pro version has demonstrated superior performance in benchmarks that measure complex reasoning and logical verification tasks. 

This makes it a valuable tool for researchers, engineers and professionals working with sensitive data or problems that allow no room for error.

In short, o3-pro does not replace o3, but rather complements it. While the base model is more versatile and faster for everyday use, the pro variant is reserved for those situations where accuracy justifies sacrificing speed and cost. 

OpenAI offers both models through the API and in ChatGPT’s Pro and Team plans, allowing users to choose the balance that best suits their needs.
