Virtual and augmented reality have been two of the great technological advances in recent years. For now, the video game sector is the one that is making the most of these two technologies. However, they are increasingly making their way into advertising and marketing campaigns, since they are very attractive tools for any user. But innovation has gone one step further by uniting the two realities, what has been called: mixed reality.

Before starting to define mixed reality, we are going to review what augmented and virtual reality has meant in the world. In general, virtual reality has not yet fully taken off as a product for individualized sales. The video game sector seems to be the only one where users are encouraged to buy virtual reality glasses. It was to be expected, since having the possibility of getting “into” the most cutting-edge games is an opportunity that gamers cannot miss.

However, in Spain it seems that virtual technology has caught on. Last year (2016) an estimated total of 105,000 virtual reality glasses were sold. And currently, there are about 150 companies that are dedicated to creating immersive content. But the most surprising fact is that almost half of these companies are SMEs that have just over five employees. Companies are beginning to bet on augmented reality and, in our country, virtual reality has been trusted even for a television series. The Ministry of Time will be the first fiction to include a chapter in which the viewer is a part and must fulfill his mission as an employee of the institution.

Mixed Reality, a new form of interaction

After this short summary of the virtual activity, we are now going to explain to you what mixed reality is all about. Translated into Spanish as mixed reality, we can glimpse what it is about. It is the combination of virtual reality with augmented reality. With virtual reality we can move to a completely invented world, modeled in three dimensions. With augmented reality, small virtual elements appear in a real space, which we have before our eyes. Well, in mixed reality the real environment is mixed with virtual environments and digital objects. What do you think?

The starting point of the mixed reality will be next week (October 17) and is marked by Microsoft, which will launch a software package for Windows. The other brands of virtual reality helmets and glasses will take advantage of the same date to start selling their new products.

Experts have divided opinions on mixed reality. While some think that it is simply virtual reality with some improvements, others dare to say that it will surpass the success of virtual reality. Although the latter is starting to bear fruit now, it can be said that it is its peak moment. We will have to wait to see the reception of the mixed rally and, of course, try it to see the differences.
